It has been said that the artists and writers of Bloomsbury lived in squares, loved in triangles and went around in circles. Earlier this year, Potterton Books in Lower Sloane Street commissioned artist Alan Halliday to go to Charleston to draw and paint sixteen interiors of the house, the Sussex country residence of the Bloomsbury menagerie.

Having lived in Bloomsbury himself when he was a student at the Courtauld Institute of Art more than forty years ago, the Bloomsbury lifestyle of Duncan Grant, Vanessa Bell and their husbands and lovers influenced Halliday's own, and he now lives in France in an extensive eighteenth century house with several studios and a gallery just south of the Loire Valley.

The sixteen paintings Alan Halliday has produced for an exhibition at Potterton Books next month, combine the rich colours and textures of the hand-painted furniture, wallpaper, rugs, pots and plates which encrust Charleston in original and attractive compositions of his own.
